Happy 4TH. of July! Just want to say hello and let you know now that I'm retired I moved 25 miles down the road on old Route 66 to a small town called Plainfield, IL. It is next to Joliet about 75 miles S.W. of downtown Chicago. My two son's left the coup. So my wife and I bought a three bedroom townhouse for a lower tax bill. We had to still stay close to our two boy's as they are still single and young 33 and 30 years old. We are enjoying are golden years. Hoping this e-mail fine's you and your family happy in good health?

Cheers,

Retired F-100D Crew Chief 416th. TFS (61-63)

Hello Les,

I was given the URL to your web site by my Texas friend Fred Mitchell. So I took a peek and was pleasantly intrigued by what I found there. My interest was piqued even more when I saw that you flew one of my favorite birds ,,, the Navion. Glad to have found your stuff.

Les. I sure am slow digesting the web site, but today, I accidentally hit the right keys and saw this opportunity to say again, that the reunion was beyond all expectations, because of the way it was organized and conducted. I salute the idea of going back to the Gold Coast. Cannot beat the room rate, and the geography of the facility fits our needs as well as any place I've participated in a reunion.

By way of suggestion, there ought to be some sort of a penalty charge for guys overdue on dues. One idea, might be to charge $5.00 per month of lateness, and demand full pay back before being allowed to register for the next bash in Vegas.

I expect to get back to the PIF one of these days when I catch up afte the migration here from North Dakota.

It is early, but I'm willing to help with the reunion in whatever way I think I'm capable. I'll look for an update on needs and requirements before I commit to the specific role that would be best for the organization.
Cheers, Hoz

Great job, Les. We needed someone like you to get this organization up and running. And running well, I would say. I was a "C" driver in Germany (Hahn and Bitburg) from '58-'61, then went to Sacramento (SMAMA) as F-100 project engineer and oversaw the Flight Manuals for T-28/F-86/F-100. Had my hand in many engineering projects for these airplanes. Spent five years there then bailed out and went airline (AAL) for the next 28. Will be looking for you at the gathering of the Hun troops. Regards, Don V

Les, This is a great website. I really like the stories. As I look back nearly 30 years to when as a nubie, I was assigned to the 510th at Bien Hoa, I realize I have lost a lot of the details of the assignment. Your stories take me back to great events like the night Tommy Thompson led the 16 ship of Hondas to the O Club and how, as Blue 16 on the left wing, I got drug through the ditch as he turned too short entering the taxiway. Or the $1 a bottle Matues wine that we all thought was wonderful, or the Hun that aborted on a night scramble because of "airspeed failure". Turns out when he lit the burner, the tail hook dropped and he engaged the approach end barrier. "Everything looked normal, it just didn't feel right".

I am fortunate to have a son flying F-16's but he has no appreciation for an airplane that would blow your feet off the rudder pedals and spit fire out the front, back and sides.

Jim.

I just stumbled upon this site. Well done. I remember Pete very well. I was at Phan Rang from Sep 70 until we flew them all home in Aug of 71. You failed to mention that Pete went down in glory. Since all the dogs were put down that meant that Ding, Col Nolan's dog, went down. Nobody liked Ding. Pete accomplished his mission; he took out Ding.

I was with the 612th; I remember you well. Hope this message finds you well.

Mortared in Bien Hoa just before departing to Phu Cat. Broken glass woke my ass up. Everyone at Bien Hoa had to remember the harrasment fire from Big Bertha everyday about 1700. First squadron at Phu Cat. Anyone remember sitting outside the barricks watching Puff half the night. Someone had to remember going to Qui Nhon to pick up soda and beer? Met a lot of good people. turned 21 Nov. 1967. This is a nice idea Les. Thanks for the memories.

Haven't seen it for a while and checked back in after getting an email from Jonathan Myer which reminded me of earlier conversations about CASBARIO. I was in SEA around the same time, although in Thuds at Takhli. Did make the trip from Clark to Tuey Hoa with a young Lieutenant and his F-100 on the wing once. Later, I got to fly the Hun with the Springfield ANG -maybe one of your old airplanes- while at W-P AFB. I'm supposed to be working, but got caught up reading the stories and couldn't stop. Really enjoyed the description of the F-100. When my kids and grandkids ask me what it was like flying the F-100, I direct them to your site with a ".this guy has probably forgotten more about the F-100 than I ever knew. And he certainly describes it in a more interesting way." Thanks again.

Greetings Les - It is a real pleasure to locate you again after a mere thirty years. I just read "Baking Soda and Pete". You got the part about Air America right. Of course I speak with a modicum of authority since I am the Air America pilot that you met first in Hong Kong, and the subsequently kept turning up at the Siam Intercontinental in Bangkok. Incidentally, they just tore down that great hotel last year in order to build some modern atrocity. They would never have been able to duplicate the old Nga Bar with it's roster of upcountry Laos types hanging on the piano bar.

I will pass on your whereabouts to the "Bearcat Lady".

Misawa '59-'63 4th FIS F102s. "D" flight with Herb Evans. Flying lead the night Bob Ettinger and Ken Moore ran together over the drink. Late in the tour went to Flight Test as I had a 4334. Flew the Super Saber for an engine change (no one available from the squadron) and wrote it up for not enough powah. Nettles was the Pratt & Whitney rep. He said I was trying to ruin the engine life and I told him that it would last longer if it got airborne instead of going off the end of the runway! I am sure I bought you a drink or two at Mamasans or somewhere. Jack VanLoan was my neighbor, once we moved onto base in the trailers.

You "OK. Let's go back and try it again." (This time set up the switches properly, you dumb shit)

Great times. Later, I heard about your Aardvark days from my old friends Ed Kowalczyk and Bob Oberg. I wound up in the FB-111 at Plattsburgh. Retired in 75. Got on with United in 79. Finished with them in 95. Drop me a line. I can't hardly screw up the switches on the golf course.

I never imagined that the 1st Lt Lester G. Frazier, whom I knew at Misawa, would become such a prolific wordsmith. I enjoyed your website immensely, especially the stories about K8, most of which I assumed were still classified. Perhaps I should have suspected you were destined for greatness when you edited our alert pad magazines with politically incorrect comments. You and I were once on an IRAN trip to Tainan that was alcohol-free. You commented that it was good to occasionally fly with another single guy, because all the married guys wanted to do the partying their wives wouldn't tolerate, and you needed a break now and then. My then-girlfriend (now my grandchildren's granny) had asked me to bring back a pretty, carved wooden animal. After walking all over Taipei looking in vain for what I knew she wanted, I saw a little water buffalo with a peasant on his back both looking up at me grinning at my frustration. So I bought him, and he has resided in our living room ever since.

Les,,,,I just found your web site. Its great..you did a good job with the F-111A storys,,,and what is greater,,,,I WAS THERE AND ALREADY KNEW OF ALL THOSE STORYS FIRST HAND.......I was Sgt Myatt in the 474th AMS A-Shop Avionics and i worked mostly with the INS and Bomb/Nav comp systems. I was there at Takhli TDY from Nellis AFB from October '72 to September'73 on two back to back TDYs....oh,,buy the way,,the Russel Viper that was over there would follow you around like a puppy dog at times. and I remember that if you see a "baby"python,,,guess what,,it's not,,,it's a russel viper. Also..the F-111A that crashed on take-off,,,they went through that plane with a fine tooth comb(what was left of it anyway) to fine out offically what caused it to crash,,,,,I was one of three that did the testing on the LRU's from that plane....and I got a lot of weird looks when I drug all that burned piles of junk in the shop and hooked it up,,and wa-la,,,,it all worked great,,,,it only looked bad and couldn't hardly tell what it was,,but it worked great. Well,,,,my email is Wchurchkey@aol.com so if you contact me,,just make sure you mention Takhli in the subject or hallor at me through the 355th takhli yahoo group of mike dunns. Thanks for the memerys. oh,,by the way,,do you remember the base christmas tree ?,,,,it was a banana tree with light and orniments,,but it worked for us. Having an "I love me" Web site is something I've teased readers of my computer column about in the past. But, as a true CASBARIO, if you've got something worth sharing, it is justifiable. Your's is justified. Good stories.

Great web site. I went through Primary at Spence AB Moultrie, GA and Basic at Laughlin AFB Del Rio, TX. Honestly can't rembember if we crossed paths. I was an aviation cadet and if you were ROTC we probably didn't see too much of each other. My son graduated from pilot training at Laughlin almost thirty years later. Thanks for the e-mail Dick Seely

Aloha from Kunsan. Thank you for granting permission to use your article on Kunsan AB C-pad on my website. The article is a enlightening piece that illuminates a forgotten period in the Cold War. The other stories on your site are simply terrific!!!

Crew Chief on lead sled from 1957 to 1961,Foster AFB, England AFB, Cannon AFB. The story about the F-111 and the cut tires--must of been SAC crew chiefs. We in the enlisted ranks had the same feelings about Sweeny. Enjoyed your site.
